The Soviet Union dumped 1.7 million tons of grain on Western markets during the Genocide. Nearly a fifth of a ton of grain was exported for each person who died of starvation.

A bird has made his home in the crook of an old sickle hanging on a barn wall. In its retired state, the blade seemingly poses no risk to the delicate home or to the bird itself. After all, the sickle is a common tool in this environment; the bird has seen many a sickle used during the harvest. Why should the bird fear for its safety?

The Poppy
Poem by Jane Taylor

High on a bright and sunny bed
   A scarlet poppy grew
And up it held its staring head,
And thrust it full in view.

Yet no attention did it win,
   By all these efforts made,
And less unwelcome had it been
   In some retired shade.

Although within its scarlet breast
   No sweet perfume was found,
It seemed to think itself the best
   Of all the flowers round,

From this I may a hint obtain
   And take great care indeed,
Lest I appear as pert and vain
   As does this gaudy weed.

Arts on the Avenue

I participated in my first art event on Vancouver Island this past weekend. Ladysmith's Arts on the Avenue is a typical art market complete with artists, musicians, performers and food. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and certainly forced me to get some work done (finally)! Next up will be a table in the Art Show & Sale portion of a local church fundraiser:

Following that event, I will be posting up a few of the new paintings I have for sale.
